Learning Area: Mathematics
Learning Observed:
Today in LH6, Evie and three other learners in his #Oresome Foursome group were developing their capabilities by learning how to find the important information in a maths word problem. They were introduced to the 'CUBE' strategy which will help them to eliminate the unnecessary information; leaving them with the important information needed to solve the problem. The group worked together to circle, underline, box and eliminate the question. After doing this, Evie understood that the numbers 18 and 25 were important. They needed to be multiplied. She drew 18 squares on her paper, wrote a sentence to describe what needed to be done, then partitioned 25 so that the number sentence became 18x20 and 18x5.
Evidence of Learning:
Evie and her group correctly discovered from the information left, after following the 'CUBES Word Problem Solving Strategy', was that they needed to find the total of 18 x 25. Although Evie correctly partitioned 25 into tens and ones, she didn't show her thinking for calculating the totals. Without showing her workings (thinking), we are unable to ascertain whether this was Evie's own thinking, or not.
Next Steps:
- Practise using the 'CUBE' strategy with other word problems so that it is learned off-by-heart.
- Talk with others in her group to find out how they can support each other.
- Show all working so that her learning coaches know what she is thinking.
